HEALTH ADVISORY- CANINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE

We wanted to bring to your attention an important health advisory regarding a recent announcement from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) regarding an emerging canine infectious respiratory disease in Oregon, and some cases in California. While we have had no known cases in Northern Nevada, we believe it’s just a matter of time before we start to see it in our area.

According to the AVMA report released on November 17, 2023 (AVMA Report), there is  concern about a respiratory illness in dogs that may result in long-term cough and/or pneumonia, and it may be minimally or not responsive to antimicrobials. As of now, there is no specific testing or vaccination available for this disease. Here is a link to Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine for more information regarding this emerging respiratory illness. https://cvmbs.source.colostate.edu/respiratory-illness-canine/

We take the health and well-being of your canine companions seriously, and we want to strongly urge that you make sure your pet is current on the Canine Influenza and Bordetella vaccines. While the existing vaccines may not specifically target this unknown infection, maintaining overall health through routine vaccinations can help support a dog’s immune system in combating various infections. Optimal protection against common respiratory infections includes an annual intranasal vaccine for Bordetella, Adenovirus 2, and parainfluenza, and the injectable influenza H3N2/H3N8 vaccine. Approximately two weeks after the last dose of a vaccine, your pet should have developed immunity. Also, if you have family visiting from out of town check to make sure their pets are current and have no respiratory symptoms.

For the time being, we also suggest avoiding voluntary dog gatherings. It would be prudent to avoid dog parks and other social events where your dog could have contact with dogs of unknown vaccination or health status. If boarding, daycare, or grooming are required, complete the vaccinations described above beforehand.

Please Note: If your dog is more than 6 months past it's annual Influenza due date, it will need to repeat a series of 2 vaccinations , 3 weeks apart.

Monitor your dog for any symptoms such as cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, fever, lethargy, vomiting, or diarrhea. Please contact the hospital if these symptoms occur, or if it is during the weekend contact the Animal Emergency and Specialty Center at 775-851-3600. Upon arrival, please keep your dog in your vehicle and call to check in. This disease is highly contagious, and to limit any potential exposure, we will do your appointment curbside.

Again, we are not currently aware of any local cases, and we have reached out to the Animal Emergency and Specialty Center and they report that they also have not had any cases yet.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us at 775-853-8550.
